Myth: “I’m too young for colon cancer”
This is the highest-stakes myth on this page, and it’s worth putting first. Colorectal cancer in adults under 50 isn’t rare-and-shrinking — it’s rising about 3% a year, even as rates in older adults fall [8]. Two separate questions get tangled together here, and they shouldn’t be: “am I old enough that I should get screened even without symptoms” (that answer is 45, per current USPSTF guidance [7]) is a completely different question from “am I too young for this specific new symptom to matter” — the answer to the second one is never yes, at any age. Myth: “You’re carrying pounds of impacted waste in your colon”
This is the sales pitch behind most colon-cleanse products, and it traces back to “autointoxication” — a 19th- and early-20th-century theory that undigested waste sits and rots inside a healthy colon, poisoning the body. It was scientifically rejected starting with a landmark 1919 paper and has stayed rejected since. The American Cancer Society’s position is direct: colon cleansing is “generally unneeded,” and the available evidence doesn’t support claims that it treats cancer or any other disease [1]. Forced irrigation isn’t just ineffective — it carries real risks, including rectal perforation, electrolyte imbalance, and cardiac strain [1]. A healthy colon empties itself; that’s its whole job.
Myth: “Floating poop means you’re eating too much fat”
The opposite of the popular belief is closer to true. In a classic 1972 experiment, researchers found floating stools sank once the trapped gas inside them was mechanically compressed out — and stool from patients with actual fat-malabsorption disorders had normal gas content and often sank [2]. Myth: “Pencil-thin stool means colon cancer”
This one has a documented paper trail — and it’s not a good one for the myth. A 2009 review traced the “narrow stool = tumor narrowing the colon” idea back to 19th-century medical textbooks, arguing it was never actually supported by reliable data and just persisted through textbook inertia [3]. Narrow or thin stool is simply what looser stool tends to look like, and loose stool is far more common than colorectal cancer. Myth: “You have 10x more bacteria than human cells”
This one used to be considered settled science — it wasn’t. A rigorous 2016 recount corrected a decades-old, widely repeated estimate: the actual ratio is much closer to 1-to-1, roughly 3.8×10¹³ bacterial cells to 3.0×10¹³ human cells, with total bacterial mass around 0.2 kg [5]. Myth: “Seeing corn or seeds means your digestion is broken”
